An important part of the game is choosing the right target, especially the driver, to achieve the desired trajectory and distance. For beginners, the variety of different discs can be overwhelming. However, it is essential to select a driver that suits your individual playing style and ability. A good beginner’s driver is easy to throw, easy to control and has understable flight characteristics that make the trajectory predictable. With this in mind, we will look at three different disc golf drivers for beginners: Innova Archangel, Eurodisc Transporter Selection and Latitude 64 Opto Diamond.

Disc Golf Driver Types

There are two basic categories of disc golf drivers, which are designed for different throwing techniques and flight distances:

Fairway Driver

These drivers have a lower speed and flight distance than distance drivers, but are more precise and easier to control. They are designed for medium-long distances and controlled curves. In the USA, fairway drivers are sometimes also referred to as control drivers, but they mean the same thing. We recommend these for all beginners.

Distance Driver

This type of driver is designed to cover long distances. They have a tapered edge, which has a positive effect on aerodynamics to enable maximum speed and flight distance. These discs are not recommended for beginners, as they can only be controlled with the right technique.

Theoretically, disc golf drivers can also be divided into hyzer drivers for an over-stable trajectory and anhyzer drivers for an under-stable trajectory. However, both of the above drivers can have these flight characteristics. Important when using these different types of disc golf driver are the skills of your throwing technique, the wind conditions and the necessary trajectory to the target position.
