In order to successfully play dog frisbee (disc dogging), a few factors need to be right. On the one hand, it is important that your dog is up to the physical challenges of the game. On the other hand, the right surface is mandatory. And then, of course, you should be able to throw a suitable disc as skillfully as possible. We have tested the best frisbees for dogs for you in our frisbee test.

What you will learn in this article?

  • With the help of which criteria we have put the dog toy to the test.
  • What there is to say about the respective weight, size, material and price.
  • What the flight characteristics of the individual discs are like.
  • And how bite-resistant each individual Frisbee for dogs was in the test.

How we tested the frisbees for dogs

Before we get to the actual dog frisbee test and the associated evaluation criteria, first a general word about the dog frisbee. Surely you have already received a free promotional frisbee on one occasion or another and thought “Oh yes, why not play with it with the dog?”,? Or maybe someone has suggested that you just go for the ‘normal’ disc. That’s not a good idea, though.

Discs designed for humans are often made of very hard and therefore very brittle material. If your four-legged friend bites the Frisbee in the course of the dog’s activity, it may break and splinter. Unpleasant injuries in the mouth area included. And surely neither you nor your dog want an unnecessary visit to the vet, right? Therefore, a Frisbee specially made for dogs is a must, not only for professionals and in competitions. It is usually made of rather softer, but quite bite-resistant rubber.

In terms of animal health, this means that for the test we only dealt with frisbees specially designed for dogs. These were produced both by manufacturers who focus on dog frisbees (such as Hyperflite from the USA), and by other pet supply brands such as Trixie and Kong. Likewise, with our German shepherd mix, we primarily checked the flight characteristics and sturdiness of the discs. Logically, the discs were accordingly large. However, there are of course also smaller Frisbees for small dogs.

Frisbees for Dogs: all results

Aerobie Dogobie

The Aerobie Dogobie weighs around 93 grams with a diameter of 20 centimeters and is usually priced at 7 to 10 euros. It is made of silicone and is therefore very soft and flexible, even around the rim. Because of the soft material, you may have to practice throwing it a bit so that it doesn’t tip away too quickly to the left or right. I managed to do this relatively well after a few attempts, so it shouldn’t be too difficult for you. Once you get the hang of it, it’s easy to throw.

At the same time, it was good and comfortable for my dog to catch, thanks to the pliable, but apparently not too soft, edge. Also pleasant: the Aerobie Dogobie proved to be very robust in the dog frisbee test. There were only slight tooth marks, but no punctures and therefore no sharp edges in need of correction. In short: Astrein!

  • Diameter: 20 cm
  • Weight: 93 grams
  • Material: very soft & flexible

Eurodisc PuncMaster

The Eurodisc PuncMaster is a bit bigger and heavier with a diameter of 23 centimeters and a weight of 135 grams. Accordingly, it is popular for medium sized dogs like the Border Collie or Australian Shepherd and larger. It usually costs around 11 to 15 euros and is made of a material that is quite strong to the bite, according to the manufacturer. Its low, firm edge and flight grooves ensure that it flies quite far. However, it often tipped to the left – which could also have been due to my casting skills.

Due to the rather hard edge, our dog picked it up perfectly and with enthusiasm. However, he’s also a confirmed fan of somewhat harder discs. What is in any case unfavorable: With the robustness it is unfortunately not too far. After regular use, we could discover small, partly pointed holes. So it is necessary to check this dog frisbee regularly and not only before the competition. However, if necessary, you can smooth the holes with a file and/or fine sandpaper.

  • Diameter: 23 cm
  • Weight: 135 gram
  • Material: solid surface & rim

Hyperflite Z-Disc Jawz

With a diameter of 23.5 centimeters, a weight of 155 grams and a price of 20 to 22 euros, the Hyperflite Z-Disc Jawz is clearly one of the largest, heaviest and most expensive discs in our dog frisbee test. The manufacturer specializes in dog frisbees. And you can see that in the discs. After all, the models of Jawz bring with them the longest durability on the entire frisbee market.

This model scores with a medium stiffness and a firm edge. This leads to the fact that it glides equally well, flies far and is excellent to catch. Other aspects worth mentioning are also the flying grooves and the Anit Glare Technology. This is to prevent the glare and mirroring of the disc. More important for us, however, was that this Frisbee is really very robust and almost bite-proof. Even after multiple uses, we could only see a few teeth marks and a very slight, but not sharp, punch on it.

  • Diameter: 23,5 cm
  • Weight: 155 grams
  • Material: medium stiffness & firm edge

Hyperflite K-10 Hyperflex

This model is also from Hyperflite. However, with a diameter of 22 centimeters, a weight of 150 grams and a price of about 16 euros, it is in all respects, below the just presented Z-Disc Jaws. (Although it also features Anit Glare technology.) It, too, is flexible and offers a firm edge that our dog was happy to grab at when catching it. At the same time, it flies very far, but tips over in places – and it’s not that stable! So be careful about small holes, some of which are pointy and file-worthy.

  • Diameter: 22 cm
  • Weight: 150 grams
  • Material: flexible & solid edge

Hyperflite K-10 Jawz

The Hyperflite K-10 Jaws also has a diameter of 22 centimeters and a weight of 150 grams. However, it is a bit more expensive with about 15 to 22 Euros – and that without Anit Glare technology. Furthermore, it is made of a material with medium stiffness and a firm edge. This means that its flight and catch characteristics are largely the same as those of the Hyperflite K-10 Hyperflex. And also, as far as the not too pronounced robustness is concerned, it is comparable to it. In any case, a dog the size of a German shepherd (like ours) with an appropriate bite will manage to ‘tack’ small, partially pointed holes into the disc.

  • Diameter: 22 cm
  • Weight: 150 grams
  • Material: medium stiffness & firm edge

Hyperflite K-10 X-Comp

The Hyperflite K-10 X-Comp also has a diameter of 22 centimeters and a weight of 150 grams, but with a price of around 19 euros (including the Anit Glare technology) it is to be found among the more expensive models. Its flight and catching characteristics seem to justify this price. After all, it flies really far and is stable and was also gladly picked up by our dog. However, the catch is in the details: the material is very stiff (it is the hardest of Hyperflite) and also the edge does not actually give anymore. This means of course a stable flight. It just also brings a low robustness and relatively many small, sometimes also quite pointed holes – and in conclusion the worst durability-robustness ratio in the dog frisbee test.

  • Diameter: 22 cm
  • Weight: 150 grams
  • Material: very stiff & firm edge

Kong Flyer

Even smaller four-legged friends are into dog sports, and the Kong Flyer with a diameter of 18 centimeters and a weight of 117 grams is quite suitable for this purpose. At the same time, with a price of about 8 to 11 euros, it is in the lower segment of the dog toy check. This makes it interesting for owners of Old English Bulldogs, Jack Russell Terriers, Ridgebacks and many other breeds. However, we also found the flight characteristics of the material used for the Kong Flyer interesting in connection with dog exercise. This is an extremely soft and flexible natural rubber. Accordingly, I needed more force to throw the disc so that it flew stably. Once I got the hang of it, however, it flew surprisingly far and stable.

Only catching was not so much fun for our dog, because the disc is quite soft and wobbly for him (single opinion!). However, in terms of robustness, this is also its great strength: there was no damage whatsoever even during various rounds of throwing – in fact, not even slight marks!

  • Diameter: 18 cm
  • Weight: 117 grams
  • Material: extremely soft & flexible

Hero Disc SuperHero 235

Is there a heroic piece hidden behind this dog frisbee? We will see! The Hero Disc SuperHero 235 belongs to the more expensive variants with a price of 19 Euros. However, with a diameter of 23.5 centimeters and a weight of 141 grams, it is almost 10 grams lighter than the Hyperflites and still looks great. And it flies well, too. Its flexible material and firm rim allow it to fly very far and stable.

The firm edge also suited our dog very well when he was catching. It didn’t matter if he bit a little harder. Because even the robustness was largely right. After repeated use, only very light, minimally pointed punctures were visible. In this respect, we would always ‘check’ the disc during use in between. However, this is probably more an optical issue than one that really requires treatment.

  • Diameter: 23.5 cm
  • Weight: 141 grams
  • Material: flexible & solid edge

Trixie Dog O Soar Jr.

18 centimeters in diameter, 100 grams in weight and a really low price of around 5 to 6 euros. And then this name … But the Trixie Dog O Soar Jr. impressed us not only with its quite unique name. It was – similar to the Kong Flyer – made of a very flexible natural rubber. This again meant a little more effort when throwing, but then a surprisingly wide and stable flight, which could be attributed not least to its former edge. But from the catch-feeling our dog frisbee test dog also showed this very soft model rather than being so enthusiastic. Maybe other dogs, for example Border Collies, Golden Retrievers or Jack Russels, see that differently …

What again is to be regarded positively: It does not sink if it gets into the water, but floats easily under the water surface. (Except we wouldn’t really call that “swimming.”) And she’s really bite-proof! Even after repeated testing, there were only very slight marks on the back and no punctures or other damage.

  • Diameter: 18 cm
  • weight: 100 grams
  • Material: flexible & solid edge

Best Frisbees for Dogs: Our Top 3

You want to keep your dog busy and do as little damage as possible to his teeth while disc dogging? Then we recommend you especially the three following discs.

1st place: The Aerobie Dogobie

Admittedly, their test report was rather short compared to the others. But sometimes the spice is in the brevity and this dog toy represents a really good overall package!

  • Our dog loves this frisbee and catches it with gusto.
  • It still seems almost indestructible even after 6 months of use. While there are of course a few bite marks, neither cracks or holes show.
  • In addition, I can now throw it pretty straight and stable – and even with a little more wind.
  • Last but not least: The price is 7 to 12 Euros, also very fair.

2nd place: The Kong Flyer

  • This disc offers excellent value for money with a price range of 11 to 15 euros.
  • The material is very soft (even at the edge), but can be set in motion quite well with a sufficient amount of force. And then the frisbee also flies immediately very far and stable.
  • The flexible material is also the reason that even after prolonged use, it seems virtually indestructible. The only sticking point: our dog was not so thrilled with the flexibility when catching it. But other four-legged friends may definitely see it differently.

3rd place: The Hyperflite Z-Disc Jawz

  • The Hyperflite Z-Disc Jawz impressed us with its great flight characteristics.
  • In addition, it seems to be the only hard Hyperflite frisbee that really makes a robust impression. Slight punching, but no holes or spikes, that’s fine with us for regular use.
  • The only downer: the price of over 20 euros, which makes it the most expensive in the entire check.

requently asked questions & answers

How much does a good dog frisbee cost?

The prices for the discs put under the microscope in this dog frisbee test ranged from about 7 to 22 euros. As you have seen, the price of a dog frisbee, its suitability in competition (flight characteristics) and its material quality are not always one hundred percent proportional to each other. So you can get a suitable disc even for 10 to 15 euros. It is only important to use models that are as bite-resistant as possible and that your dog likes to catch. What can be somewhat different from animal to animal.

Best Frisbees for Dogs: Conclusion

A good dog frisbee is characterized by the fact that it is robust and (with a little practice) can be thrown far and stably. So that your dog does not hurt himself when catching it, it should also not be significantly harder than necessary. The harder it is, the easier it is for sharp holes and edges to form. Thus, it is important to be attentive when choosing the material. But even after that, it is worth checking the discs again and again and filing down the tips if necessary. And of course, a Frisbee is not a chew toy. But for chewing or picking and tearing games, there are better variants anyway, so that should not be a problem anyway.
